Canada and the United States have agreed to accelerate negotiations on new trade deals covering steel, aluminum, and energy, following a high-level meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump at the White House.
According to Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s trade minister, both governments will work “quickly” to finalize agreements aimed at easing the impact of US Section 232 tariffs and stabilizing North American supply chains.
The US currently imposes 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. Washington signaled potential flexibility on tariffs in exchange for broader cooperation on energy and critical minerals.
Trump described the talks as “positive,” saying concrete progress will be unveiled soon. With 85% of Canadian trade already tariff-free, the new negotiations aim to protect sensitive sectors like metals, lumber, and autos from further tariff volatility.
