China’s exports of steel sheet/plate dropped sharply in August to 5.63 million metric tons, marking a 15.1% year-on-year decrease and an 8.2% decline month-on-month, according to official customs data.
From January to August 2025, China exported 48.08 million metric tons, almost flat (down 0.1% YoY).
The decline was attributed to:
-
Seasonal off-season demand affecting HRC exports.
-
The end of a rush to export caused by global market uncertainty and US tariffs.
HRC export prices fluctuated during August:
-
Peaked at $493/mt FOB (Aug 8–18)
-
Dropped to $480/mt FOB (Aug 26–31)
Industry analysts note that the slowdown may continue if global demand remains weak.
