The European steel industry – a key part of Europe’s manufacturing chain – is facing global overcapacity, high energy costs, and raw material shortages. In her State of the European Union address, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged decisive measures to protect Europe’s steelmakers, safeguard jobs, and accelerate the green transition.

Von der Leyen stressed the EU’s “existential struggle for security and resilience”, committing to proposals supporting clean manufacturing value chains and reinforcing industrial autonomy.

Axel Eggert, Director General of EUROFER, warned that the industry faces “all odds” — including unfair trade practices and the investment challenge of decarbonization — and urged rapid implementation of the EU’s plans.

EUROFER also called for the strengthening of steel safeguard measures under the Steel and Metals Action Plan to prevent a surge of cheap, high-carbon imports.
“This is essential to secure Europe’s strategic autonomy, clean future, and quality jobs,” Eggert stressed.
