EU’s CBAM Poses Bigger Threat to Indian Steel Industry than US Tariffs

Industry experts have clarified that the recent US tariffs on certain steel products will have minimal impact on India’s steel sector. Instead, the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is expected to be far more challenging for Indian exporters.

The CBAM, set to be fully implemented over the next few years, will require exporters to account for carbon emissions linked to their production processes. This could lead to higher costs for Indian steel producers who rely on traditional, coal-based manufacturing methods.

As Europe is a major export market for Indian steel, compliance with CBAM rules will be crucial. Indian companies are now under pressure to invest in greener technologies, such as electric arc furnaces and renewable energy integration, to remain competitive.

Experts warn that while US trade measures may capture headlines, it is EU environmental regulations that could reshape the future of India’s steel exports.
