When the IJmuiden steelworks transitions to using green hydrogen-based steelmaking, Tata Steel Nederland will start supplying Ford in Europe with Zeremis green steel.

Ford will not be able to meet its 2035 carbon neutrality goal without securing future supplies of steel that has been manufactured in a more ecologically beneficial manner. Ford is now the first company committed to purchasing the green steel that Tata Steel wants to create via the hydrogen route, which is more environmentally friendly and sustainable than the way steel is currently made.

The firms want to look into potential to employ additional eco-friendly steel products as Ford currently targets the use of low-CO2 steel in its brand-new, all-electric, medium-sized crossover, which will begin production in Europe in 2023. This includes the recently introduced Zeremis Carbon Lite steel from Tata Steel, which can reduce carbon emissions by up to 100%. Tata Steel Nederland's CO2 reductions are the basis for the decreased CO2 intensity, which independent assurance expert DNV has confirmed.
