A greenfield location in northeast Arkansas has been chosen by Highbar LLC, a newly created firm focusing on sustainable scrap metal recycling and steel production, to erect the first of two rebar steel mini-mills.

From 2015 to late 2020, when United States Steel Corp. of Pittsburgh fully acquired EAF steelmaker Big River Steel, Stickler served as its CEO. U.S. Steel continues to invest in the Big River electric arc furnace (EAF) factory near Osceola, Arkansas.

Near Osceola, in northeast Arkansas, the Highbar mill will be situated on more than 600 acres of land. An upgraded Mississippi River port facility, a direct Class 1 train link, and a projected nearby solar installation are all part of the project. Once all permissions are in place and equipment deliveries start, ground breaking is planned for the second quarter of 2023.

Highbar intends to invest around $500 million. The Germany-based SMS Group will supply the Highbar mill with a significant portion of its technology.

More than 20% of the firm's output is presold under long-term contracts, according to the corporation, demonstrating its strong market appeal.
