Hyundai Steel has signed a memorandum of understanding with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and the Korea Electrical Manufacturers’ Cooperative to secure stable supplies of low-carbon steel for South Korea’s large-scale national power-grid expansion.

Demand for steel used in transmission towers is projected to reach 700,000 mt by 2038, and the partnership will help support South Korea’s growing electricity network and clean-energy transition.

Under the agreement, Hyundai Steel will supply low-carbon angle steel and key raw materials essential for power-transmission infrastructure. These materials will facilitate the movement of renewable-energy output from coastal regions to industrial hubs and metropolitan areas.

The MoU also includes cooperation on next-generation transmission-tower technologies, ensuring the grid can accommodate increasing line density, higher renewable integration, and expanded regional connections.

Despite a challenging market characterized by weak demand and rising production costs, Hyundai Steel said it intends to strengthen its role in national industrial development. The company expects that deeper cooperation with KEPCO will allow it to expand its portfolio of high-value-added steels for advanced power infrastructure.

This partnership also supports South Korea’s broader goals of supply-chain stability, grid resilience, and sustainable industrial modernization.
