India’s Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) and Tata Steel have signed a strategic agreement to expand the use of low-carbon zinc solutions in steel production, marking a step forward in industrial decarbonization.

The collaboration will focus on integrating “EcoZen” low-carbon zinc into steelmaking processes. According to HZL, EcoZen is produced using renewable energy and has a carbon footprint of less than 1 ton of CO₂ per ton of zinc—around 75% lower than the global industry average.

By reducing emissions at the raw material stage, the solution enables manufacturers to lower emissions across the steel value chain.

HZL CEO Arun Misra described the partnership as “a significant milestone in scaling up low-carbon zinc adoption and strengthening greener supply chains in India.”

Zinc remains a critical material in steel production, particularly for galvanizing, corrosion protection and extending product lifespan across sectors such as infrastructure, automotive and renewable energy.
