India’s crude steel production reached an estimated 168.4 million metric tons in fiscal year 2025–26, marking a 10.7% year-on-year increase, according to a statement from the Ministry of Steel on April 9.

The country also recorded strong trade performance, with finished steel exports rising 35.9% year on year to 6.6 million metric tons, while imports fell sharply by 31.7%, although total import volumes were not disclosed.

Domestic demand remained robust, as steel consumption climbed to 164 million metric tons, up 8% year on year, driven primarily by infrastructure development.

Meanwhile, India’s total domestic steel production capacity reached approximately 220 million metric tons during the fiscal year, reflecting continued expansion in the sector.
