JSW Energy Limited has commenced operations at India’s largest green hydrogen plant, marking a major milestone in the country’s transition toward low-carbon steel production.
Located adjacent to JSW Steel’s Vijayanagar steel mill in the southern state of Karnataka, the facility will supply green hydrogen directly to the mill’s direct reduction unit, replacing fossil fuel-based inputs.
Under a seven-year off-take agreement, JSW Energy will provide 3,800 metric tons of green hydrogen and 30,000 metric tons of green oxygen annually to JSW Steel.
The project forms part of JSW’s allocation under the Indian government’s SIGHT (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition) program, administered by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), which covers a total capacity of 6,800 metric tons per year.
Additionally, JSW Energy has signed an MoU with JSW Steel to scale up production to 85,000–90,000 metric tons of green hydrogen and 720,000 metric tons of green oxygen annually by 2030.
“This partnership marks a significant step in decarbonizing India’s steel sector and achieving the country’s net-zero goals,” JSW Energy said.
