The European Steel Association (EUROFER) has elected Geert Van Poelvoorde, chairman of the board of ArcelorMittal Europe Steel, as its new president, effective October 1.

Van Poelvoorde takes office as the European steel industry faces weaker exports and historically low production. EU steel exports to third countries fell 20% year on year in the first half of 2026, while steel production reached a historic low of 125.8 million mt in 2025 and declined by a further 1% year on year in the first five months of 2026.

EUROFER estimates that the EU’s new steel trade measure, effective since July 1, could create conditions for approximately 15 million mt of European steel production to return annually. Van Poelvoorde called for stronger investment conditions and greater demand for EU-made products to support the sector.

He also urged adjustments to the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), more competitive energy costs and stronger industrial value chains. On exports, Van Poelvoorde stressed the need for European steel, particularly low-carbon products, to remain competitive in international markets.
