In a significant move towards sustainable steel production, Vulcan Green Steel, an Oman-based entity affiliated with the renowned Jindal Steel Group in India, has recently placed an order with Italian plantmaker Danieli for a state-of-the-art direct reduction plant. The plant will utilize Energiron technology, a groundbreaking development jointly created by Tenova and Danieli. This environmentally conscious initiative is set to be situated in Duqm, within Oman's Al Wusta region, where it will serve as a crucial component of a new electric steelmaking complex.

The upcoming steelmaking hub in Duqm is poised to become a central player in the production of green steel. Leveraging the availability of natural gas and renewable energies, which will be converted into hydrogen, the complex aims to contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly steel production process. The direct reduction plant, boasting an impressive 2.5 million metric tons annual production capacity, is anticipated to be operational by 2026. Additionally, it will have the capability to produce Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) for storage or export purposes.

The Energiron direct reduction plant is designed to commence operations using a natural gas feed initially, transitioning seamlessly to a hydrogen blend once onsite hydrogen becomes available. This forward-looking approach underscores Vulcan Green Steel's commitment to embracing hydrogen-ready technologies for cleaner and greener steel production.

One of the distinguishing features of Energiron technology is its ability to capture CO2 emissions from the process and repurpose them for other applications. This innovative carbon capture and utilization process not only reduces the overall carbon footprint of the plant but also opens up new revenue streams for sustainable plant operations.

With sustainability at the forefront, Vulcan Green Steel's strategic investment in this cutting-edge DRI plant signifies a bold step toward achieving eco-friendly steel production in the Middle East. The collaboration with Danieli and Tenova underscores a commitment to adopting the latest advancements in technology to drive positive environmental impact and foster a greener future for the steel industry.
