Polish mining company Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW), Europe's largest coking coal producer, has commissioned two new longwalls at its Pniówek and Knurów mines, expanding mining operations as the company implements a long-term restructuring program.
At the Pniówek mine, production has started at longwall N-9, which contains approximately 308,000 mt of high-quality coking coal. Mining is scheduled to continue until June 2027, with the longwall equipped with 69 powered roof support sections. It is the second active longwall in block N-2.
Meanwhile, the Knurów mine has launched longwall No. 6 in seam 408/3, with estimated coal reserves of 380,000 mt. Mining operations at this section are expected to continue until mid-2027.
Together, the two new longwalls contain approximately 688,000 mt of coking coal reserves.
The developments come as JSW advances its 2026–2035 Recovery Program, approved by the company's Supervisory Board in autumn 2026. The plan focuses on stabilizing liquidity, reducing costs, reorganizing production processes and restoring operating profitability following a period of severe financial difficulties.
