Polish Steel Sector Urges €50/MWh Energy Cap to Protect Competitiveness

Poland’s steel industry is calling for urgent government and EU intervention to reduce electricity prices for energy-intensive sectors to €50/MWh, according to recent industry statements from the New Industry Forum in Katowice.

Industry leaders warned that current Polish wholesale power prices average €97.96/MWh, significantly higher than levels needed to remain competitive against other EU steelmakers. Germany, by contrast, has already approved a €50/MWh industrial electricity cap, supported by a €4.5 billion package starting 2026.

Polish steel producers emphasized that high energy costs remain the primary barrier to recovery, compounded by pressure to modernize blast furnaces and adopt carbon-capture technologies.

Industry officials concluded that without rapid crisis measures, Poland risks losing its position in the European steel market, stating that €50/MWh is the minimum threshold needed to restore competitiveness.
