In order to achieve its goal of being carbon-neutral by 2050, Posco began constructing a demonstration facility for manufacturing steel by hydrogen reduction.

On July 26 at the Pohang Technical Research Laboratories, Posco and Primetals, a British plant building company, inked a commercial agreement for the collaboration of hydrogen reduction steelmaking engineering technology.

By using their own, environmentally beneficial "HyREX (Hydrogen Reduction) technology," Posco hopes to become carbon neutral by the year 2050. In order to do this, the business made the decision to work with Primetals, which also collaborated with Posco to construct the FINEX facilities, to begin designing the HyREX demonstration facility in earnest this month.

Posco intends to proceed with this concept in the demonstration plant EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) phase and confirm the commercial viability of hydrogen reduction steelmaking by 2030. Following production optimization, the business intends to gradually replace the present blast furnace with HyREX-based facilities in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

decrease of hydrogen Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) is created using 100% hydrogen in the steelmaking process, which is then melted to create molten iron in an electric furnace. The method is seen as a way to achieve carbon neutrality in the steel industry because there are no carbon emissions during it.
