India’s state-owned steel producer Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) achieved its highest-ever single-day crude steel production of 21,012 metric tons on December 14, the company said in a statement on December 16.

The output corresponds to slightly over 100% capacity utilization, marking a rare operational milestone for the producer. RINL added that its average daily crude steel production in December 2025 stands at 19,450 mt, translating into 92% capacity utilization so far this month.

The achievement comes amid significant financial pressure on the company, stemming from high input costs, steel price volatility, legacy debt and working capital constraints. These challenges have weighed on production levels in recent periods, despite the plant’s technical capabilities and workforce expertise.

The milestone closely follows a warning from India’s Ministry of Steel, which stated that RINL must consistently maintain at least 92% capacity utilization to ensure long-term financial sustainability.
