Tata Steel Limited has signed an agreement with the government of Jharkhand to invest approximately $1.22 billion in deploying new-age green steel technologies at its Jamshedpur steel plant, the company said on January 20.

The agreement was signed during the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos. The investment will focus on advanced iron-making technologies, including HISARNA and EASYMelt, aimed at significantly reducing carbon emissions.

HISARNA technology allows the use of domestic coal and low-grade iron ore and, when combined with carbon capture, offers a substantially lower carbon footprint. Following successful pilot trials in the Netherlands, Tata Steel plans to establish a commercial-scale HISARNA facility with a capacity of around 1 million mt per year at Jamshedpur by 2030.

The EASYMelt (Electrically Assisted Syngas Melter) technology is designed to reduce coke consumption through the use of syngas and could cut CO₂ emissions by up to 50 percent, according to the company.
