Tata Steel Limited has reached a non-binding agreement with the Dutch government to transition its Ijmuiden steel mill to low-emission production, marking a key step in the company’s decarbonization efforts.

The Dutch government has pledged up to €2 billion in funding, while Tata Steel Nederland has applied for an additional €0.3 billion from the EU Innovation Fund. The balance of the financing will be covered through internal cash flow, project financing, and support from Tata Steel.

The Ijmuiden site is one of the largest industrial polluters in the Netherlands, and the agreement comes after months of negotiation over subsidy support for cleaner operations.
