German steelmaker Thyssenkrupp Steel has announced a €2.4 million investment to expand its laboratory infrastructure in Duisburg, supporting the transition to low-carbon steel production.
The new facility will focus on testing iron ores for hydrogen-based direct reduction (DR) processes, a key technology for climate-neutral steelmaking.
Key capabilities include:
- Simulation of realistic hydrogen-based production conditions
- Analysis of ore performance, including reduction behavior and material stability
- Testing with increasing hydrogen concentrations over time
The company also plans to combine direct reduction with electric smelting, enabling more flexible use of raw materials while maintaining efficiency.
This investment highlights Thyssenkrupp’s strategy to accelerate the shift toward low-emission steel production and optimize future feedstock quality.
