The UK government has unveiled its Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS) 2025, a major policy shift that places UK steel at the core of national security. For the first time, procurement reforms will allow the Ministry of Defence (MOD) to prioritize domestic steel producers, a turning point for the sector after years of being sidelined in defense projects.
According to UK Steel, this move strengthens not just defense capacity, but also economic resilience, officially recognizing steel as an “industrial security priority” rather than leaving it to global market competition.
Key elements of the new strategy:
🔹 Support for UK businesses through long-term contracts and stronger homegrown supply chains
🔹 Building resilience by securing manufacturing capacity, stockpiles, and encouraging investment in defense-critical industries
🔹 Streamlining procurement by simplifying requirements and improving transparency
Industry leaders welcomed this commitment, saying it will boost collaboration between government and industry and showcase UK steel’s capacity to scale, innovate, and deliver for defense.
