The Spanish steelmakers’ association UNESID has issued a strong warning that Europe must act immediately to defend and rebuild its industrial base, citing mounting structural pressures across key sectors such as steel and advanced manufacturing.
According to UNESID, Europe is facing declining industrial capacity, intensifying global competition and persistently high energy and production costs, all of which threaten long-term economic resilience. The association stressed that a strong industrial ecosystem is essential not only for growth, but also for strategic autonomy, employment and innovation across the European Union.
UNESID called on EU policymakers to strengthen trade defense instruments, ensure fair competition in global markets, and support investment in industrial transformation and technological capabilities. Framing the challenge as “now or never,” the association emphasized that decisions taken today will shape Europe’s industrial future for decades.
The statement reflects broader concerns within the European steel sector over competitiveness, market access and the need for coordinated EU-level industrial policy to secure sustainable growth.
