The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced plans to return more than $13 billion in unobligated climate funds, redirecting resources toward traditional energy security priorities.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the decision reflects the Trump administration’s commitment to halting what it describes as “wasteful spending.” He emphasized that the move delivers on President Trump’s campaign pledge to prioritize affordable, reliable, and secure American energy.

The funds had been earmarked for clean energy innovation, industrial decarbonization programs, and grid modernization efforts. Their return is expected to slow or halt several planned climate-related projects, though specific cancellations have not yet been disclosed.

This move aligns with the administration’s broader energy strategy, which places greater emphasis on domestic fossil energy production, grid reliability, and fiscal accountability.
