United States Steel Corporation has received the final permit to begin construction of its $100 million slag recycling facility at the Edgar Thomson plant in Braddock, Pennsylvania, the company announced on February 20.
The project is the first Mon Valley Works initiative to secure regulatory approval since US Steel finalized its partnership with Nippon Steel. Site preparation is set to begin immediately, with construction scheduled for summer 2026.
US Steel said the facility could cut emissions from slag processing operations by up to 50 percent annually, compared with existing methods. The recycler will cool slag in a closed system, eliminating the need for open-pit storage.
The company added that the project will support circular economy goals, giving new life to steelmaking by-products such as slag, which is widely used in cement production.
