Vietnam’s Steel Imports Fall 15.3% in September 2025; Scrap Imports Rise

Vietnam’s steel imports in September 2025 reached 1.14 million mt, marking a 15.3% decline compared to August, according to data from the General Department of Customs. Meanwhile, scrap imports increased to 527,881 mt, up 3.5% year on year.

During the first nine months of 2025, Vietnam’s total steel imports fell by 8.8% year on year to 11.21 million mt. In contrast, scrap imports surged 29.7% year on year to 4.59 million mt over the same period.

📌 Main Scrap Import Sources

  • Japan was the largest source in September, with 302,611 mt, up 86.3% year on year. Total shipments for January–September reached 2.45 million mt, up 35.3% year on year.

  • Australia supplied 2,266 mt, a sharp 92.9% decline year on year.

  • US shipments totaled 69,737 mt, up 79.8% year on year.

  • Hong Kong delivered 25,519 mt, down 27.2% year on year.

📌 Main Steel Import Sources

  • China remained the largest supplier, with 590,968 mt in September, though this represented a 45.2% decline year on year. Total imports for January–September were 6.47 million mt, down 22.2% year on year.

  • Japan exported 150,713 mt in September, down 17.2% year on year, but total January–September shipments increased 10.8% to 1.69 million mt.

  • India’s shipments dropped sharply by 93.9% in September to just 1,602 mt, with a year-to-date fall of 94.7%.

  • Taiwan supplied 77,872 mt, up 34.7% year on year.

  • South Korea shipments were stable at 122,794 mt, down only 0.1%, with year-to-date imports rising 29.4%.

  • Indonesia recorded a strong performance with 144,399 mt in September, up 121.7% year on year, and 960,988 mt for January–September, a significant 83.3% increase year on year.
