In an effort to prevent Moscow from being able to finance its conflict with Ukraine, Ottawa claimed that Canada had prohibited the import of all Russian steel and metal goods.

The declaration claims that both completed and unfinished goods are prohibited.

The 200 percent tax the US declared last month on Russian aluminum and associated goods went into effect on Friday. Rusal produces aluminum in Russia, which provides about 6% of the world market.

According to government statistics, in 2021 Canada imported steel and aluminum goods worth a combined CAD 213 million (USD 154 million) and CAD 45 million (USD 32.5 million) from Russia.
