The European Commission will introduce new protective measures on steel imports by mid-October, replacing existing rules.
According to EUROFER, the measures will secure EU steel capacity and protect against global overcapacity, particularly US tariffs (50%) and Chinese oversupply.
EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič confirmed the bloc will consider total imports, not just China, with “very tough trade defense measures” expected.
Since 2008, Europe has lost 60 Mt of steel capacity, making safeguards vital for geo-economic autonomy.
