ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS) has announced plans to commission two automotive-grade steel production lines at its Hazira plant in Gujarat by 2025. The new facilities include a continuous galvanizing line and a continuous galvanizing and annealing line, both designed to produce steel with strength levels up to 1180 MPa in coated and uncoated variants.

These additions are part of AMNS's Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) 2 complex and aim to reduce India's dependence on imported high-grade automotive steel. AMNS CEO Dilip Oommen stated that the expansion will enable domestic production of globally recognized steel products, increasing the company's market share in India's automotive sector.

India's automotive steel demand currently stands at 7.8 million metric tons annually and is projected to grow by 6-7% per year. Traditionally, the sector has relied on imports for specific high-end steel grades used in automotive manufacturing.

This development aligns with AMNS's broader expansion strategy at the Hazira facility. In January 2024, the company announced plans to build the world's largest single-location integrated steel plant at Hazira, with the first phase expected to be completed by 2026 and the second by 2029, ultimately producing around 24 million metric tons of steel annually.

These strategic initiatives position AMNS to meet the rapidly growing demand for high-quality steel in India's automotive industry, fostering self-reliance and reducing import dependency.
