The initiative allows to reduce CO2 emissions from road transport by about 90%

Global steelmaker ArcelorMittal is launching a low-carbon transport service to deliver steel to European customers, which will help reduce CO2 emissions from road transport by about 90%. This is stated in a press release from ArcelorMittal.

«Successful tests have been carried out to transport steel products between ArcelorMittal’s plants and customers using a variety of low-carbon transportation solutions, including electric trucks and trucks powered by HVO (hydrobiodiesel),» the statement said.

Today, deliveries are made by low-carbon trucks between ArcelorMittal’s plants in eight countries – Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and the United Kingdom. Steel is currently delivered to customers by low-carbon transport in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, France, Germany and Poland.

In 2023, ArcelorMittal Europe shipped 27.5 million tons of steel. Road transport accounts for about 38% of total product shipments, and this mode of transportation has the largest CO2 footprint, with an average of 65 g of CO2/km per ton of steel. The use of trucks running exclusively on HVO can reduce carbon emissions by 80-90%.

The initiative was launched at the end of 2022. As part of a pilot test in 2023, 190 thousand tons of steel were shipped over a total distance of 579.83 thousand km, which meant saving 794 tons of CO2 (-82% compared to diesel trucks).

Various tests of electric trucks were also conducted in Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, France and Germany.

In January-June 2024, ArcelorMittal Europe increased steel production by 7.8% compared to the same period in 2023 to 15.64 million tons. In January-September, steel shipments decreased by 0.5% y/y – to 14.64 million tonnes, including 10.51 million tonnes of flat products (-0.08% y/y) and 4.14 million tonnes of long products (-1.7% y/y).

ArcelorMittal is a leading global steel and mining company with operations in 60 countries and production assets in 18 countries.
