Argentina's automotive industry recorded a slight improvement in production during May 2026, offering signs of stability after a difficult start to the year. According to data released by the country's automotive manufacturers association, total vehicle output reached 37,762 units, including passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, compared to 37,521 units in April.
While production edged higher on a monthly basis, the sector continued to face pressure from weaker demand and softer export performance. Vehicle exports totaled 25,237 units in May, down 6.1 percent compared to the previous month. Domestic wholesale sales remained relatively stable at 35,979 units, although locally manufactured vehicles accounted for only 11,882 units of that total.
The industry's year-on-year performance remained under pressure. Compared to May 2025, vehicle production declined by 21.5 percent, while exports fell 4.2 percent. Domestic sales experienced an even sharper contraction, dropping 39 percent from the same month last year.
Looking at the broader picture, Argentina produced 167,629 vehicles during the first five months of 2026, representing a 19.3 percent decrease compared to the corresponding period in 2025. Exports totaled 104,520 units, down 2.2 percent, while domestic sales declined 23.1 percent to 184,033 units.
Despite these figures, industry leaders believe the market is gradually reaching a more stable production base. New investment projects and the renewal of local manufacturing programs are expected to support production levels and improve competitiveness in the coming months.
As Argentina's automotive sector continues its adjustment process, manufacturers are focusing on operational efficiency, export opportunities, and long-term investment plans to navigate an increasingly competitive market environment.
