The Chinese steel industry, according to sources, is running out of steel slabs. While Russia (sanctioned) and Ukraine (many steel mills shut down) used to be the primary exporters of steel slabs, demand has changed since the conflict began, emptying the Chinese slab and HRC market.

Japan only gets steel exception

The Tariff Rate Quota judgment on Section 232 steel tariffs between the US and Japan was announced by US President Joe Biden. This will allow Japanese steel companies to export about 1.25 million tonnes of steel to the United States each year without being subjected to the 25% steel import taxes. However, this is contingent on 100% of the steel being melted and cast in Japan.
