The European Commission has put forward a proposal to extend the exemption of duties and quotas on Ukrainian imports, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s iron and steel sectors amid the ongoing war.
As exports of iron and steel to the European Union represent a key source of revenue for Ukraine, continuing to allow these products to enter the EU duty-free is seen as crucial for the country’s economy during the conflict.
This proposal will now be reviewed by the European Council and European Parliament. If approved, it will ensure that Ukrainian steel exports remain exempt from EU steel safeguard measures beyond June 5, 2025, the current expiration date of the exemption.
In 2022, the European Council introduced temporary measures, suspending all import duties on certain Ukrainian goods for a year starting June 4, 2022. This measure has been extended twice—first in June 2023, then again in June 2024.
