The Federal Association of Steel Recycling and Waste Management Companies (BDSV) and the Association of German Metal Traders and Recyclers (VDM) have jointly published a position paper outlining key policy recommendations for the upcoming federal government. The associations emphasize the indispensable role of the metal recycling industry in conserving resources, protecting the climate, and maintaining the competitiveness of German industry.
Key Recommendations:
Holistic Supply Chain Approach: BDSV and VDM stress the need for policies that encompass the entire supply chain. They critique the current focus on producers and steel mills, urging greater recognition of certified waste management companies as pivotal contributors to the circular economy.
Unrestricted Trade of Secondary Raw Materials: The associations argue against trade restrictions that impede exports of secondary raw materials like steel and metal. They propose incorporating recycled raw materials into trade agreements and fostering international raw material partnerships to secure supply chains.
Reduction of Electricity Costs: Highlighting the burden of high electricity prices on the industry's competitiveness, BDSV and VDM call for lowering state-imposed fees, surcharges, and taxes on electricity to align with minimum European levels. They also advocate for accelerating the expansion of renewable energy sources and implementing temporary support mechanisms during the energy transition.
Streamlined Permitting Processes: To enhance operational efficiency, the associations recommend expediting permitting procedures and reducing bureaucratic hurdles at the EU, federal, and state levels. They also emphasize the importance of developing rail logistics for scrap transportation to improve supply chain efficiency.
These recommendations aim to fortify the metal recycling sector's role in Germany's sustainable development and economic resilience.
