A broad coalition of German industry groups, trade unions, environmental associations and steel stakeholders is urging the federal government to accelerate the creation of lead markets for green steel, especially in railway construction.
The coalition highlighted that deploying low-emission steel could cut up to 100 mt of CO₂ per kilometer of new rail track — equal to 33,000 mt avoided on routes like Hamburg–Berlin.
While Belgium and France already use green steel in rail projects, Germany has so far implemented only isolated pilot programs.
Stakeholders stressed that stronger policy signals, local-content rules, and federal funding are essential to scale up adoption.
According to the German Steel Federation, Germany and the EU already possess certified low-emission steel capacity, giving the country a head start — provided the government moves quickly.
