GREEN STEEL PROJECT EXPECTS TO RECEIVE €143 MILLION FROM THE EU

A hydrogen iron and steelmaking project named HYBRIT has received an €143 million investment from the European Union

The project, led by SSAB, LKAB, and Vattenfall, will demonstrate a whole value chain for hydrogen-based steelmaking, from mine to fossil-free steel, on an industrial scale. HYBRIT was chosen as one of seven unique initiatives to receive financing from the 'Innovation Fund,' which aims to encourage project concepts that will assist to transform the industrial landscape..

The grant includes €108 million for a hydrogen direct reduction process demonstration in Gällivare, including fossil-free hydrogen production; €30 million for a demonstration of electric melting of hydrogen-based direct reduced iron in Oxelösund; and €5 million for a demonstration of fossil-free DR-pellets production for the hydrogen reduction process in Oxelösund.
