US-based steel producer Hybar LLC has selected SMS Group to supply a second CMT 550 continuous minimill at its Osceola, Arkansas, steelmaking complex. The new facility will add 630,000 short tons of annual rebar production capacity and will operate alongside Hybar’s existing CMT 550 mill.

Groundbreaking is expected in late 2026, with startup scheduled 24 months later. The new mill will integrate steelmaking, casting and rolling into one continuous process and produce rebar in sizes ranging from 12.4 mm to 35 mm. The meltshop will include an electric arc furnace and twin ladle furnaces, with production exceeding 80 metric tons per hour.

The two mills will form the world’s first twin CMT 550 system, allowing Hybar to use existing infrastructure and a shared renewable power supply. The site has a 105 MW solar park supported by a 160 MWh battery storage system.

The configuration is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 35% compared with a conventional minimill, supporting Hybar’s expansion of lower-carbon rebar production in the US.
