Hyundai Steel has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and the Korea Electrical Manufacturers’ Cooperative to secure the long-term supply of low-carbon steel for South Korea’s major national power-grid expansion program.

Demand for transmission tower materials is projected to reach 700,000 metric tons by 2038, positioning the partnership as a key contributor to the country’s clean-energy transition.

Under the MoU, Hyundai Steel will supply low-carbon angle steel and other core materials used in the construction of transmission towers. These materials are essential for transporting renewable electricity generated in coastal regions to industrial hubs and metropolitan areas.

The agreement also includes plans for collaboration on next-generation transmission-tower technologies, supporting:

  • Higher power-line density

  • Greater renewable-energy integration

  • Expanded inter-regional energy transfer

Despite weaker steel demand and rising domestic production costs, Hyundai Steel said it aims to strengthen its role as a strategic supplier to national infrastructure, emphasizing that the partnership aligns with South Korea’s goals to enhance grid resilience, supply-chain stability, and sustainable industrial development.
