According to a Bloomberg article, UK judge Finola O'Farrell mandated that the trial in the Samarco dam catastrophe lawsuit against Australian miner BHP Billiton take place in April 2024.

The Samarco Mariana dam collapse in 2015, which resulted in 19 fatalities and a severe environmental disaster that affected the states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo, is the subject of the trial. The amount sought by the claimants is reportedly £10 billion ($12 billion).

The corporation will thus be questioned by the other side over its involvement in the catastrophe.

Despite operating Samarco, the joint venture between Vale and BHP, the Brazilian mining corporation Vale was not joined to the complaint.
