The Indian government has approved three pilot projects using green hydrogen in steelmaking, backed by approximately $42 million in funding under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The projects aim to test the technical feasibility of hydrogen-based steel production and will be completed within the next three years.
Key applications include:
- 100% green hydrogen use in direct reduced iron (DRI) production
- Hydrogen injection in blast furnaces
- Reduced reliance on coal and coke in ironmaking
The initiative will be implemented by Matrix Gas Renewables, Simplex Castings, and Steel Authority of India.
This move is seen as a major step toward decarbonization, with the projects expected to demonstrate safe, scalable production of low-carbon steel and accelerate India’s transition to greener industrial processes.
