India has imposed an antidumping (AD) duty on imports of cold rolled non-oriented (CRNO) electrical steel from China, following a detailed investigation by the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), according to a government notification issued on December 22.

Under the notification, an AD levy ranging from $223.80 to $414.90 per metric ton will apply to all Chinese-origin CRNO electrical steel imports for a period of five years.

The DGTR investigation, conducted under the Customs Tariff Act and India’s antidumping rules of 1995, concluded that Chinese producers were exporting the material at dumped prices below normal market value. The authority found that Indian manufacturers had suffered material injury, including adverse impacts on domestic prices, sales volumes, and profitability, and warned that further damage could occur without corrective measures.

CRNO electrical steel is a key input used in the manufacture of electric motors, transformers, and generators.
