To reduce coking coal import dependency and ensure higher supplies to the steel sector, government-run Coal India Limited (CIL) has firmed up plans to construct and operationalize nine new coal washery projects across the country with an aggregate capacity of 30 million mt per year, government sources said on Tuesday, June 25.

At present, India's total raw coking coal washing capacity is around 23 million mt, including 9.25 million mt capacity operated by private entities.

"With the setting up of new washeries, we are expecting to increase supplies of washed coal exclusively to the steel sector by 15 million mt per year," the sources said.
