Indonesia’s exports of stainless steel finished flats grew 7% year on year to 2.39 million mt during January–September 2025, from 2.24 million mt in the same period of 2024, according to BigMint data.

The growth reflects robust demand from Asian markets and the continued expansion of Indonesia’s stainless steel capacity.

  • China remained the top buyer with 760,000 mt, up 2% year on year.

  • Vietnam’s imports surged 15% to 510,000 mt, driven by construction and downstream production.

  • Malaysia recorded the sharpest increase — up 103% to 200,000 mt.

Bahodopi Port handled the majority of shipments (2.36 million mt), confirming its role as Indonesia’s key export hub.

Export growth has been supported by:

  • Capacity expansions at PT Krakatau Posco, Tsingshan Group, and PT Jindal Stainless Indonesia.

  • Abundant, low-cost nickel reserves, giving Indonesian mills a major cost advantage in stainless steel production.

With new lines scheduled to start by 2026, Indonesia is expected to maintain its leadership in Asia’s stainless steel trade.
