Japan’s domestic steel consumption declined 1% year on year to 39.23 million metric tons in the first 11 months of 2025, according to data from the Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF).

In November 2025, steel consumption totaled 3.59 million metric tons, down 3.7% month on month, but up 0.8% year on year.

Sector-wise data showed mixed performance:

  • Construction sector: down 3.2% YoY to 7.41 million metric tons

  • Automotive sector: up 3.3% YoY to 10.12 million metric tons

  • Shipbuilding: down 2.5% YoY to 2.55 million metric tons

The figures reflect continued weakness in construction demand, partly offset by resilience in automotive production.
