The Malaysian government has officially launched its Steel Industry Roadmap 2035, a 10-year strategy to build a globally competitive, sustainable, and technologically advanced steel sector.

Developed by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), the roadmap focuses on six pillars:

  • Technology upgrades and industry consolidation

  • Sustainable production with greater scrap use and hydrogen-based DRI

  • Stronger domestic ecosystem to reduce import dependency

  • Smart manufacturing and automation

  • Diversification of export markets

  • Education, training, and R&D partnerships

Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said the plan will position Malaysia as a regional hub for sustainable steel production while supporting the country’s net-zero climate goals.

The roadmap is closely aligned with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and will require close cooperation between government, industry, and academia, with regular reviews to ensure progress.
