A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between automotive supplier Mubea and Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH has now been signed with a view to fostering closer collaboration on the subjects and concerns of sustainable steel manufacturing, green steel product processing, and closed-loop steel recycling.
Salzgitter Flachstahl and Mubea have been partners for a long time. For more than 20 years, Mubea has sourced supplies of high-grade strip steel products that Salzgitter Flachstahl then processes further, mostly for the automobile sector.
The German company that specializes in lightweight design aims to utilize a lot more green steel products in the coming years. Additionally, Mubea has pledged to decreasing its own emissions by at least 25% until the year 2025 and is pursuing extremely ambitious environmental targets.
Mubea is thus concentrating on the SALCOS - Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking transformation initiative of Salzgitter AG. The Salzgitter Group intends to gradually transition its steel production to hydrogen-based processes starting at the end of 2025, with the goal of achieving production that is essentially carbon neutral by 2033. Additionally, the Salzgitter Group already uses an electric arc furnace-based process to manufacture low CO2 steel products.
