Nucor Steel Gallatin hired Danieli to modernize its hot strip factory in Ghent, Kentucky, in order to expand the selection of steel grades and boost strip production capacity.

The first high-quality coil was created by the improved factory. Due to the installation of the new Danieli downcoilers, a new product for the plant, an 18-mm-thick strip, was produced.

Nucor Steel Gallatin will be able to increase production of AHSS, API line pipe, and several other added-value grades in widths up to 1,870 mm thanks to the new plant configuration that transforms it from a small, thin-slab casting and rolling plant into an ultramodern QSP, Quality Strip Production plant (73.5 in).

A brand-new, patented, single-strand vertical-curved Dysencaster with a capacity of up to 3 million short tons annually will provide the whole output. The redesigned mill, which now runs in a 2+6 mill stand format and includes new roughing stands, sophisticated combined intensive and laminar cooling, and downcoilers, is connected to the caster by a new tunnel furnace.

A new, high-performance DC EAF with Q-Melt package, a dual ladle furnace, and future provisions for a vacuum degasser are also included in the renovated facility. From melting to final hot-rolled coils, the factory is fully automated by Danieli Automation, making it suitable for Industry 4.0.
