Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied the entire requirement of 5,700 metric tons of defense-grade steel used in the construction of three newly commissioned Indian Navy vessels, reinforcing its role in supporting India's defense manufacturing capabilities.

The specialized steel was produced at SAIL's Rourkela, Bokaro, and Bhilai Steel Plants and supplied for INS Dunagiri, INS Agray, and INS Sanshodhak. These vessels were officially commissioned on June 21, 2026, marking another milestone in India's naval modernization program.

To meet increasing demand from the defense sector, SAIL has expanded the production capacity of Defense Metallurgical Research (DMR)-grade steel plates, particularly at the Special Plate Plant of Rourkela Steel Plant. The company continues to strengthen its capability to manufacture high-performance steel for strategic defense applications.

The project supports India's "Make in India" initiative by reducing dependence on imported defense materials while enhancing domestic shipbuilding capabilities.
