The 16th annual SteelOrbis Rebar & Wire Rod Conference convened on January 20, 2025, at Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Approximately 100 traders, executives, and market experts gathered to examine critical issues affecting the long steel products market, including anticipated consolidation and the prospect of increased tariffs in 2025.

Tommy McCartin, Principal Economist and Manager of Metals Forecasting at S&P Global, presented on the current challenges facing long steel products, highlighting the interplay between weak demand and rising international trade barriers. He projected that global economic growth would remain below 3 percent over the next several years, with U.S. growth potentially averaging less than 2 percent in 2025. McCartin emphasized that production cuts are expected to be a significant factor supporting price growth in the coming year.

The conference also addressed the influence of financial and political events on the economies of the U.S., EU, and China, as well as the effects of conflicts and political crises on the global economy. Discussions included the potential impact of the new U.S. administration on domestic and global trade, particularly concerning the construction and infrastructure sectors.

Moderated by Murat Askin, Founder and CEO of StaalX, the event featured insights from industry leaders such as F.D. Baysal, President and CEO of SEBA Group and Board Member of IREPAS, and Didem Taskiran, Long Products Sales Manager for Colakoglu Metalurji. The conference provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies to navigate the evolving landscape of the long steel products market amid anticipated consolidations and trade policy shifts.
