The United Arab Emirates has introduced a broad maritime restriction barring hundreds of seagoing vessels from entering its waters and ports, with Iranian-flagged ships featuring prominently on the list.
According to a notification circulated by UAE-based RAK Ports, the restriction covers 472 vessel entries. The affected ships are prohibited from entering UAE waters, ports and the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Shipping agents have been instructed to verify vessel names and IMO numbers before confirming nominations and to avoid dealing with vessels included on the list. While Iranian-flagged ships represent a significant portion of the affected vessels, the measure also covers ships operating under several other flags.
UAE authorities have not provided detailed reasons for each vessel’s inclusion. The measure does not represent a restriction on steel imports, but it could indirectly affect steel shipments if listed vessels would otherwise have been used for UAE-bound cargoes. Alternative tonnage may be required in such cases, potentially complicating vessel selection and shipment planning. However, no clear impact on steel cargoes, freight rates or delivery schedules has emerged so far.
