US Steel Files $22 Million Lawsuit Against Algoma Over Pellet Contract Dispute

US Steel Corporation has filed a lawsuit against Canada’s Algoma Steel Group Inc., seeking over $22 million in unpaid iron ore pellet shipments and alleging breach of contract.

Filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, the case involves a multi-year pellet supply agreement signed in May 2020, covering 1 million mt through January 2027 from US Steel’s Minnesota mines.

Algoma reportedly failed to pay for September 2025 deliveries and terminated the contract on October 1, citing the 50% US tariff on Canadian steel that made the deal “economically untenable.”

US Steel argues the termination constitutes a material breach, and is also seeking nearly $100 million in lost profits. The outcome of this case could have broader implications for cross-border steel supply agreements amid heightened trade tensions.
