ArcelorMittal has successfully completed the first phase of a carbon capture pilot project at its Ghent steel plant in Belgium, demonstrating CO₂ capture rates exceeding 90% from blast furnace gas.

The project, conducted in partnership with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), BHP and Mitsubishi Development (MDP), involved more than 4,500 hours of operational testing using MHI's Advanced KM CDR Process technology.

The trial assessed the technology's performance under challenging steelmaking conditions, where blast furnace gas contains carbon monoxide, dust, sulfur compounds and other impurities. The results confirmed the technical feasibility of capturing CO₂ from blast furnace off-gas at an operating integrated steel plant.

Based on preliminary assessments, full-scale deployment of the technology could reduce CO₂ emissions intensity at the Ghent facility by up to 24%. The plant has an annual steel production capacity of approximately 5 million mt.

The partners are now preparing the second phase, which will focus on capturing CO₂ from flue gases generated by the hot strip mill's reheating furnace. Unlike the first phase, which targeted pre-combustion gas, the next stage will evaluate post-combustion capture under more variable operating conditions.

The findings will support further engineering studies and assessments of potential commercial-scale deployment.
